Seed Count
per package has changed
Due to the
Hurricanes in the seed producing areas, Centipede seed is in short
supply. Some Centipede Seed producers have started using a seed coating that is
44.4% of the weight you are buying. You will need to adjust your
application rates as well as your prices to reflect the cost increase.
If you paid $19.75 for a pound of seed, it now costs you $35.55 for the
same pound of seed.
The cost of seed,
divided by the percentage of seed in the package, multiplied by
the inert matter percentage (missing seed), plus the cost of the
missing seed will give you the true cost.

You will
need to use 2 pounds of coated seed to 1 pound of uncoated seed which
will double your seed cost.
To avoid problems,
inform your customer & give him the choice of either reducing the amount of
seed used, which will take longer for completion; or keep the maximum
seed count per 1000 sq ft with the fastest completion to sod like
conditions. Seed cost vs. speed of completion should be the customer's
decision.
Coating seed is a
common practice among many seed producers. There are still some seed
producers that sell uncoated seed at a higher price per pound.
As with all
varieties of seed, a contractor needs to know what he is buying .... the
purity, germination rate and percentage of inert matter.
